Amish Lap Quilt

CA$400.00
sold out

… Machine pieced and quilted, binding hand hemmed …

Front: linen and wool

Back: rayon

Batting: cotton/wool

Binding: linen/cotton blend

Thread: 100% cotton

Size: 38” x 45” (Lap/Wall/Crib/Baby Size)

Details: Amish women have practiced quilt making for generations. Like many cultures, their quilt history is in using scraps from the yardage from their handmade garments and repurposing clothing.

The Amish are a simple living, self-sufficient people and practice Christian pacifism. The Amish typically dress plainly and in solid colours.

Black is often a distinguishing feature in their mainly geometric quilt patterns. Their patterns draw from elements in their agrarian work and landscape.

The front of my simple Amish inspired quilt here is made from linen and wool scraps. The backing is a soft and silky rayon which gives the piece a fluid drape. The colours are more muted than I usually work with, but I enjoyed experimenting with this subtle palette.

I updated this quilt by using a 40 wt hot pink thread for the machine machine quilting, interspersed with Sashiko style hand quilting in a deep magenta.
